N.J. cops are still arresting people for weed. Police say they won’t stop until legal marijuana is official.

The college student knew she wasn’t going to make the light.

The 19-year-old freshman tried anyway, gunning the engine Nov. 17 to beat a traffic signal in front of the Mennen Sports Arena. A Morris County Park Police officer was right there waiting, watching from the arena’s parking lot in Morris Township.

He pulled her over and almost instantly said the car smelled like marijuana, according to the student, who did not wish to be identified because her case is still pending. The officer then searched the car.

He found 3 grams of weed, a bong and rolling papers. The woman was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, drug paraphernalia and other minor violations, including running the red light.

The student — like thousands of others charged with low-level marijuana possession — found herself stuck in limbo as the fate of legal weed in New Jersey looms.

“I do understand I was under the age of 21 and any substance is wrong. I didn’t expect to get away scot-free,” she said. “It’s frustrating not having an idea of what this will lead to. I don’t know what my future holds in terms of this case. I’m a college student. I don’t want this stuff on my record.” [Read more at NJ.com]
