CannaBiz: What it takes to get into the cannabis industry

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The past year has been one of big, faithful leaps for Dan and Anna Novak. The Albuquerque couple recently got married, and on April 1, they’ll open The Bad Company and step into New Mexico’s recreational cannabis industry.

On a recent Monday, the couple was putting the finishing touches on their Eubank Blvd. retail location.

“It’s exciting but it’s terrifying. It’s so much money and so much responsibility,“ Anna said

Dan Novak has long been a proponent of legal recreational cannabis sales and said he was among the first to apply for a retail license. An auditor by day, he’s more prepared than most to navigate the complex web of licensure requirements.

“So we were actually, I think, the fourth people to apply for a retail license. I was very much on top of it, clicking the apply section [of the state website] every day,” he said.

Novak said state regulators seem to have been well-intentioned as they created a recreational cannabis industry, but setting up his dream business hasn’t been a straightforward affair.

“If it weren’t for the fact that my wife and I were doing this together there might have been times throughout the process where I’d have been like,” said Novak as he mimed washing his hands of the whole thing. “The fourth time we got denied for a location getting a lease, I was like ‘I don’t know if this is going to happen.” [Read More @ KOB4.com]
